I mean, you’re not really surprised are you? It’s a hipster dream and I love anything that I can post on Instagram. But Hummus and Wine isn’t all style and no substance. It’s delicious.
The menu serves the food and drink in the name, but so much more. The namesake hummus is the star of the show; creamy, packed with olive oil and served in gigantic portions. It’s accompanied by warm pitta, but if you can, try it with the challah bread; a cloud-like, braided Jewish loaf.
The rest of the menu is an ever changing feast. This is a restaurant for sharing and when the menu has so many great options, it’s a blessing. Chef and founder Maoz Alonim is renowned for his skills. Thanks to One Two Culinary Stew, I now know that before moving to Cambridge, Maoz ran the hugely successful Basta in the Carmel market in Tel Aviv.
At Hummus and Wine, he cooks seasonal produce with delicate care. Slow roasted whole onions wrapped in foil, pulled crab and thick green beans which reach almost a metre in length! Oh and oysters too, because why not? If you can’t decide, and I don’t blame you, pick the Jackson Five. These five vegetable dishes are great value and delicious; the perfect introduction to the magic of Hummus & Wine.
Everything arrives on kitsch mismatched floral plates, adding to the homely atmosphere. This isn’t a spot for people who hate sharing – try a little bit of everything and enjoy a communal experience. The outdoor courtyard is a hidden gem; perfect for long Summer evenings with friends.
And don’t forget the wine! There is an expansive wine list but to be honest, I rarely stray from the surprise wine. Choose red or white, and that’s your decision made. At £15 for a half litre carafe, it’s impressive quality and transports you to long, hot days in a Mediterranean country.
For an escape from the chains and busy centre of Cambridge, head down Mill Road and discover the delights of this independent gem. What’s your favourite dish at Hummus and Wine?
