I bloody love a brownie. Rich, decadent, gooey and the ultimate indulgence; it's so often done wrong but when it's done right, you just can't beat it. So of course when I was invited to the launch of Gourmet Brownie's Valentine's range, I couldn't wait to dig in! Better yet, this brownie business is an independent local success story, based in Ely near Cambridge, so I headed to the stunning Poets House hotel to treat my tastebuds.
Poets House is one of my favourite hotels in the Cambridge area and the perfect location for a luxurious brownie-filled dinner. The room was exquisitely decorated with a floral display from Farm Flowers, filling the space with pink blooms, edible flowers and the scent of Eucalyptus, alongside beautiful cards from AV Typography. At our seat, we were greeted with a wooden board of brownies, ready to decorate with a selection of goodies including dried raspberry pieces, rose petals, mini meringues and even an edible glitter spray. I think I was probably more talented at eating the brownies than decorating them, but I loved getting creative. Everyone's results were very impressive and I was particularly inspired by Claire A Belle Makes and Catriona Mackenzie's creations.
As well as the brownies at our seat, there was also a table groaning with the weight of seven (yes, seven!) different flavours of brownie for us to try. The brownie range itself is full of variety and there's something for everyone; from vegans to gin lovers. The classic combination is of course chocolate and raspberry (which I've already mentioned I'm a fan of in my review of the Ivy Cambridge Inspiration Menu) and this is at the centre of Gourmet Brownie's Valentine's range.
The range includes Raspberry and Rose, Raspberry Delight, Raspberry and Pistachio, Raspberry Gin Extreme, "Nuts About You" and even a vegan Coconut and Raspberry. My favourite, unsurprisingly, was the gin brownie. Unlike most gin-flavoured products which promise gin but rarely deliver, the brownies pack a real punch of gin without the overwhelming alcohol burn. The result is a perfect balance between rich chocolate, creamy ganache, a hard chocolate topping and the smooth taste of delicious raspberry gin from another local business, the Ely Gin Company.
Other delicious flavours include pistachio, rose and most importantly, the raspberry.
I also love the story of Gourmet Brownie as a local independent food business. Based in Ely, near Cambridgeshire, the desire to partner with local brands and create a real community of local producers was evident, including the inclusion of the Ely Gin Company in one of the brownie flavours to the promotion of local up and coming graphic designer AV Typography, aged just 16 years old in the invitations and goody bags. And when Tom Kerridge is a fan, you know they're tasty too!
