Beaches aren’t just for summer. I love heading to the seaside in the colder months. There’s something so atmospheric about rolling waves, crisp air and the smell of the sea. You don’t need sunshine! October is one of my favourite times of year to travel in the UK for a quieter and more unique experience. And Great Yarmouth is a destination which is seriously underrated at this time of year.
Less than two hours from Cambridge, Great Yarmouth is a great option for a coastal visit. Located in Norfolk, this famous family holiday destination has been popular as a seaside escape since the 1700s. It offers more than 15 miles of sandy beaches to explore and plenty of opportunities for fish and chips!

This October half term, there are a host of exciting activities on offer. For a spooky seaside experience, head to Fairground Frights. The traditional Pleasure Beach has transformed to offer five nights of hair-raising entertainment. This freaky fairground promises scary rides, creepy characters and a fright-filled evening. The event even won a “ScareCON” award for best scare entertainment last year! Fairground Frights runs 5pm to 8pm from Wednesday 27 October to Sunday 31 October.
 
If, like me, you prefer a more relaxing experience, then head pumpkin picking instead. It’s an Instagram cliche, yes. But who doesn’t love the experience of choosing your very own unique pumpkin? In Great Yarmouth, Hirsty’s Family Fun Park is the place to go for all things pumpkins. You can pick and carve your own perfect pumpkin, surrounded by hay bales, fields and a Mega Maize Maze. The park is open 10am to 4pm from Saturday 23 October to Sunday 31 October.
